From the editor:
I never kept journals or diaries when I was younger, partly because that's a pretty faggy thing for a man to do, but mostly because I can't think of much that would be more embarrassing than if someone would to read them.
The strangely effeminate J probably never had the former concern, but apparently never considered the latter.
